First Hot Bath Since My Surgery: A Glorious Experience

This topic is about the experience of taking a first hot bath after ostomy surgery and the success and tips shared by others in the community. The person who shared their story felt a sense of triumph and newfound confidence after enjoying a long, hot bath without any issues. Here are some helpful tips and insights from the community:

1. Many people with ostomies find they can enjoy water activities like soaking, swimming, hot tubs, and even scuba diving without any problems.

2. If you notice the tape edges loosening due to moisture, try gently blow-drying the flange or tape after your bath.

3. Surprisingly, inexpensive black electrical tape can be more effective than specialized waterproof tapes for resealing edges.

4. If you usually remove an extra outer "sticky seal" before bathing, it can help prevent hardened adhesive residue and make cleanup easier afterward.

5. Consider scheduling your bath days to align with full appliance changes, such as twice a week, to avoid unnecessary wafer changes.

6. Sure Seal Rings, which are thin, waterproof adhesive rings that fit around the flange, can make your appliance completely waterproof and often extend wear time by 3 to 4 days. Many suppliers offer free samples.

7. Some people prefer to bathe with the stoma uncovered for a short "air-dry" period after emptying the pouch, which can help reduce skin irritation. Just be sure to monitor the output closely.

8. If you're new to having an ostomy, it's encouraged to try bathing when you feel ready. Proceed with caution and don't hesitate to ask questions on forums for support.
