Bleeding around stoma after heavy lifting?

This topic is about experiencing bleeding around the stoma after engaging in heavy lifting or strenuous activities, such as gardening. The bleeding seems to come from the skin at the base of the stoma rather than from inside the bowel. Here are some helpful insights and advice on managing this situation:

1. Light bleeding from the edge of the stoma is quite common and can occur if you clean the area too vigorously. It usually resolves on its own within a few days.

2. If you notice blood in the pouch itself, rather than just on cleaning wipes, it's a good idea to contact your stoma nurse or surgeon to ensure there isn't a more serious issue.

3. Engaging in heavy physical work, frequent bending, or using a tight barrier ring can cause friction around the stoma, leading to bleeding. During activities that involve a lot of movement, consider using an adhesive paste instead of a solid barrier ring. Make sure the seal is snug but not too tight.

4. Acidic output can irritate and break down the skin around the stoma, so it's important to keep the skin well-protected to prevent soreness and bleeding.

5. If you experience persistent or spurting bleeding, it may require medical attention. In some cases, a surgical stitch might be necessary to resolve the issue.

6. For minor surface bleeding that occurs between appliance changes, you can apply Stomahesive Powder (ConvaTec) to the affected skin. Brush off any excess powder and repeat this process 3–4 times at each appliance change.

7. Taking a break from strenuous activities and allowing yourself to rest can help the irritated tissue heal and stop the bleeding.
