Barium contrast and wafer damage after MRI?

This topic is about the effects of barium contrast on ostomy wafers after undergoing an MRI. A person shared their experience of having a leak and wafer degradation after an MRI with oral barium contrast and IV dye. They are curious if the barium, which contains iodine, might speed up the breakdown of the wafer and suggest changing the wafer once the contrast has passed. They are seeking feedback from others who have had similar experiences with imaging studies.

Here are some insights and advice from others:

1. Some people with ileostomies have noticed that large amounts of oral barium can significantly increase output, requiring them to empty their pouch frequently. However, they did not see any damage to their wafer when it was time for a routine change the next morning.

2. A person with a colostomy who drank barium for a scan did not experience any negative effects on their pouching system.

3. Radiology staff have advised some patients with ileostomies to only drink the second bottle of barium (an hour before the scan), while patients with intact bowels usually drink two bottles (one the night before and one an hour before).

4. One person is preparing for a scan with Gastrografin and IV dye. They mentioned that IV dye alone did not cause any issues with their stoma equipment in the past, and they plan to share their experience after using both contrasts.

5. For those getting ready for barium or Gastrografin studies, it is wise to expect higher output, keep supplies nearby, and consider changing the wafer proactively if there are concerns about erosion.
