Swimming with an Ostomy - Worried about leaks and embarrassment

Swimming with an ostomy can be a bit daunting, especially if you're worried about leaks or feeling self-conscious. But with a few tips and tricks, you can enjoy the water and feel confident in your swimwear. Here’s some advice to help you dive in with ease:

1. Swimwear and Concealment
- Consider wearing your wafer and bag under a bathing suit. A two-piece tankini can be a great option as it provides overlap to hide the pouch.
- You can fold the bag upward or lay it across your belly to minimize bulk.
- A Lycra swim wrap or waistband can help keep the pouch from peeking out and make it easier to choose a swimsuit.

2. Swimming in Pools, Lakes, and Surf
- Many people have successfully swum in pools, lakes, and even the ocean without experiencing leaks or wafer breakdown.
- Try to empty your pouch and wait until your stoma is relatively quiet before getting into the water.
- When in the surf, avoid facing large waves directly and steer clear of body-surfing to reduce stress on the wafer.
- Typically, you can expect a wear time of 3 to 7 days in the water, though high heat or frequent immersion might shorten this.

3. Extra Security Products
- Using a Sure Ring Seal can provide extra security during hot weather or extended water exposure.
- Barrier strips, sometimes referred to as "brown tape," can be placed over the edges of the wafer for added waterproofing. Check with your supplier for specific brands.

4. High-Heat Environments
- Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and spa cold rooms are generally fine, but be prepared to change the wafer sooner as heat can reduce wear time.

5. Roller Coasters and Amusement-Park Rides
- Many have enjoyed roller coasters and fast rides without any issues related to their stoma or pouch.

6. Massage and Lying Prone
- Full Swedish massages are okay. You can request natal cushions, which are pregnancy massage pillows with an abdominal cut-out, allowing you to lie on your stomach comfortably.

7. Typical Wear-Time Experience
- Without extra water exposure, you might experience about 7 days per wafer with one mid-week bag change.
- With frequent swimming, you might find it prudent to change the flange every 3 days.

8. Psychological Reassurance
- Most people won’t notice your pouch once it’s concealed, and your confidence will likely grow quickly after your first few swims.
