Seeking Advice for Painful Discharge and Lumps

This topic is about dealing with discharge and severe pain from an inactive rectum, which can be a challenging experience for those with an ostomy. The person who started the discussion has been living with a non-functioning rectum for nearly five years and faces painful episodes about once a month. These episodes involve the expulsion of hard lumps and lead to significant exhaustion. Although a doctor recommended using arachis oil enemas and gel suppositories, the setup is not practical for them. Surgery was considered but dismissed due to concerns about future fertility. They are looking for alternative ways to manage or prevent these painful episodes.

Here are some shared experiences and advice from others who have faced similar issues:

1. Some people have experienced painful discharge due to an inactive or damaged rectum. One person described the rectum as becoming very tight from years of non-use.

2. To relieve pain, try different positions such as lying on your left side, sitting on the toilet, or walking around. These positions might help ease the discomfort until the discharge passes.

3. Anal irrigation has been helpful for some. One person managed to clear compacted mucus by using two self-modified anal-irrigating catheters connected to a shower unit. They recommend looking up older forum posts for more detailed techniques.

4. While surgical removal of the anus or rectal stump is an option, it is a major surgery. One person was offered this choice but decided to live with the pain for now.
