Hello Everyone,

I made a big mistake, I wore some wafer extenders and turns out, I’m allergic to them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Who knew…?

So, has anyone successfully used an allergy cream on the peristomal skin, then used stoma powder or antifungal powder to make the skin “dry”. After applying the barrier wipe/spray like normal, were you able to get the wafer to stick successfully?

I am open to any suggestions you all may have. FYI - I am taking benedryl to help.

Thanks in advance everyone,

Rocks

Hi Rocks,

This same thing just happened to me last week when I thought I'd try a cream barrier film instead of the liquid one I always use. I just didn't know how to apply the cream properly, I guess. Even though I wiped much of it off because it was taking so long to dry, it still prevented parts of the wafer from having good adhesion. To help keep it stuck, I put two extenders all the way around it. The next day the outer edge off the extenders started to itch and after that, I started to see some redness and a rash that followed the extenders all around. This issue with the adhesive causing rashes happened right after surgery, too, and I learned (from ostomates online) that I needed barrier film. It's remarkable how applying some film can make such a huge difference.

When I pulled the extenders off, some skin went with a small piece of one of them but Stomahesive dried it up. I used a cortisone cream on the other pink, itchy areas and they healed after about 2 days.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

I have a colostomy that's usually thick or slightly loose. Using a two-piece, they generally come with belt hooks. I have used various healing products together. Antifungal powder is one I have tried, too. After sun aloe vera or hydro cortisone. Anyway, I don't worry about it not sticking. I hook up the belt and that holds it down and I put a nylon wrap over that. Wash and repeat whenever necessary.

I did have barrier film on and am still breaking out from extenders.

Maybe I need more? 🤔

Gorgy Porgy,

What is the nylon wrap that you’re talking about?

I wonder if it could be the brand of barrier film. I use 3M Cavilon and I apply it with a cotton ball. That seems to keep things from affecting my skin. Is Cavilon what you're already using?

I tried a Cavilon wipe but it didn't provide the same level of protection. Being such a small thing, it probably didn't have enough product on it. With the cotton ball, I can go from the furthest part of the wafer and work my way down to all around the edge of the stoma.

Rayon, sorry. From Ostomy Secrets. I use two types: a swim wrap and a regular wrap that is wider.

An old school tip for the future try new products on the opposite side of your stomach first to check for allergies.
