Living with an Ileostomy Due to Severe Colonic Inertia

Living with an ileostomy due to severe colonic inertia can be a challenging journey. This condition led to a permanent ileostomy for someone after emergency surgery in June 2012, followed by an unsuccessful J-pouch reversal a year later. The surgeon noted that this was the most severe case of colonic inertia he had seen. The person experiences a mix of good and bad days and is concerned about how having an ileostomy might affect future dating, especially after hearing comments from relatives.

Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights:

1. Consider sharing your experiences in forums or sections dedicated to "Intimacy and Dating" to connect with others who discuss relationships and body-image concerns.

2. Many people with an ileostomy continue to have fulfilling romantic relationships. Often, partners are accepting of the ostomy, and any dating difficulties are more about personal self-consciousness than the ostomy itself.

3. Focus on accepting yourself. Once you feel comfortable with your stoma and pouch, potential partners are likely to follow your lead and be more accepting.

4. Try to ignore discouraging remarks from relatives. Their opinions do not have to define your dating or intimacy prospects.
