Is My Stoma Inverting? What Should I Do?

This topic is about a concern some people have with their stoma, which is the opening created during surgery to allow waste to leave the body. The issue is that the stoma sometimes sticks out and other times sits level with the skin. This can be worrying, so here are some helpful points to consider:

1. It's quite common for a stoma to change between sticking out (an "outie") and sitting flush with the skin (an "innie"). This usually isn't a medical emergency.

2. When the stoma is flush with the skin, the main concern is the risk of leakage and skin irritation. Choosing the right appliance is crucial to prevent these issues.

3. Consider using convex products, such as convex wafers or convex one-piece or two-piece bags. These have a built-in dome that presses the skin around the stoma inward, helping the stoma to stick out more and reducing the chance of leaks.

4. While convex products might be a bit more expensive than flat ones, they often offer better security and longer wear time, even if the stoma later starts to protrude again.

5. If you still experience leakage or skin problems despite using convex products, it's a good idea to consult a stoma nurse. They can provide personalized advice and recommend the best products for your situation.
