Hello, fellow

Greetings from New Zealand, fellow Stomates!

My colorectal surgery was performed in Kettering, Northamptonshire, in March of 2020, just as COVID-19 was beginning to spread north from London.

On the 5th day, I was barely able to walk, but I was discharged and sent home by ambulance, together with a bucketful of syringes to inject myself with, a carton containing dressings, and a 500 ml bottle of morphine.

However, here I am, still alive and kicking to tell the tale, for which I am eternally grateful!

During these past 12 months, however, I have been getting torpedo-shaped stones in my pouch! They are not causing any problems as yet, and I have no other detrimental symptoms, but should I be worried? Has any other fellow stomate experienced this?

I would be grateful for any replies.

I would say definitely not normal. You should take one of those in and get checked.

By chance, are you taking any vitamins or pills that may not be dissolving and coming out as you were taking them in? This happens due to the coatings on capsules. They don't break down. Very odd seeing that. A pill I take dissolves, and the microbeads in the capsule are as tiny specks or sand crystals.

Whoa! To that!

For those of you still looking for love after your ostomy... don't give up! One day, when you least expect it, there will be a message in your inbox... always remember that when you're not looking, life has a brilliant way of surprising you with someone in your life you have so much in common with, and either you make a great new friend or you will find the person you were always looking for! I, for one, thank God I found this website... I was in a low place when I first started, and now I've never been happier! ~Traci~

If you have an ileostomy, the warrior is onto something. Even if you have a colostomy, this could be true depending on how much colon is left. The more colon, the less likely.

I came to this thread expecting you to have a urostomy, and it is normal there, but also a sign that you have kidney stones developing. So it needs to be treated.

With a colostomy, it is not normal, and you need to see your doctor.

Welcome, Bucky. My original ostomy surgery and the three subsequent ones were all during COVID, so I totally relate to your story. Strange times, indeed. My thinking is that the stones must be related to something you are eating, so has your diet changed lately?

Hi Sharon!

Greetings from a sunny Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Thank you for your reply.

I think I will take the stones I have collected and take them to be analyzed.

Hi Buckster,

Do that sooner rather than later, as stones that form in the bowel are called enteroliths and can form for a variety of reasons. But left untreated, they can get pretty big, which could cause an obstruction. It should be easy for the lab to tell you exactly what they're made of, and then your gastroenterologist can get to work on a course of action. Let us know what you find.

;O)

Thank you for that important information. At least I now know that it is a known condition and even has a name.

I am most obliged to you.

I agree, I was getting torpedo-shaped things, and then it dawned on me that they were one of my vitamin pills that were passing straight through. I now cut them into two, and hey presto, no more long and pointy things. Even no more half of a long and pointy thing, so they must be digesting properly now.

My thoughts agree with Warrior, could it be medication coming out undissolved. Otherwise I would say it might just be poop in a weird way. If they are hard as a rock though and not medication I would consult a doctor. Leave them in your bag so you can show them to a doctor. Sometimes I get output that is torpedo shaped and not pills but they are soft. I think sometimes the body processes food in weird ways. Try to find a pattern. Is it a food you are eating that it happens everytime you eat that food? It might be helpful to keep a journal of what you are eating and also when you get these torpedo shaped output. Look for a pattern.

This is exactly why i clicked. I thought this fellow had a urostomy. I also had a teeny tiny "rock" in my bag one day.

I KNOW for a fact it's not cross contamination. A kidney stone fragment ended up in my bag. I knew i had a kidney stone before all this so i wasn't worried or really surprised.

But that little thing was hard as a rock. Duhhh... i know. I just didn't expect it to be so pointy. No wonder they hurt so bad!
