Open vs. closed pouches - Which is better for colostomy?

Choosing between open-end (drainable) and closed-end (disposable) colostomy pouches can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're new to this. Here's a simple guide to help you decide which might work best for your daily life.

- Advantages of drainable/open-end pouches:
1. They can be "burped" to release gas, which helps prevent the pouch from ballooning.
2. They are particularly useful right after surgery when your output is more liquid and frequent. You can easily open the tail to empty them.
3. These pouches have a larger capacity and can be reused after rinsing, meaning you won't need to change them as often.
4. If you're using a 2-piece system, you only need to detach the pouch for emptying, leaving the skin barrier in place for several days, which is gentler on your skin.

- Advantages of closed-end pouches:
1. These are designed for single use, so you just remove and discard them when they're full, with no need for rinsing.
2. They are great for active situations like sports or yard work because you can dispose of them quickly and discreetly.
3. Some people find the adhesive on closed-end pouches to be softer and more flexible, which can lead to fewer leaks and a better fit to your body.

- Combining both types:
1. Many people find it helpful to use both types of pouches. You can order both each month and use closed-end pouches when you're out and about or when your output is thicker. At home or when your output is looser, you might prefer drainable pouches to save on supplies.
2. It's important to experiment to see what works best for you. You can request free samples from manufacturers to try out different options for fit, comfort, and performance.

- General tips:
1. If you're not already using a 2-piece system, consider trying it out.
2. Look for local ostomy support groups and keep asking questions. There's always more to learn, and support can make a big difference.
