Flying with an Ostomy - Tips and Advice

Flying with an ostomy can be a bit daunting, especially if you've had some awkward experiences in the past. If you're planning a trip soon, like a 4-day adventure to Las Vegas, here are some tips to make your journey smoother and more comfortable:

1. **Screening and Privacy**
- Let the TSA know you have an ostomy and ask for a private screening if you prefer.
- Carry a doctor’s letter, though it might not change the screening process.
- Use the TSA Notification Card for medical conditions to discreetly inform agents without having to speak about it openly.
- Consider TSA Precheck for future trips, as it often involves less invasive screening.

2. **Food and Output Management**
- Eat lightly before your flight and about an hour before landing to manage your pouch's filling rate.
- Opt for low-residue foods like chicken soup or plain white rice.
- If you have an ileostomy, using gel sachets in your pouch can help thicken liquid output during the flight.

3. **Hydration**
- Stay hydrated by buying or filling a water bottle after passing through security.
- On longer flights, ask the cabin crew for an extra bottle of water.

4. **Seating and Restroom Access**
- Choose a seat near the back or close to the lavatories for easier restroom access.
- Use the airport restroom just before boarding to delay needing to empty your pouch during the flight.

5. **Packing Strategy**
- Keep all your ostomy supplies and medications in your carry-on, with a backup set in your checked luggage.
- Prepare a small “quick-change” kit for emergencies during the flight or at the airport.
- Clearly separate any additional medical devices for inspection to minimize issues.

6. **General Mindset**
- Most TSA agents are professional and respectful, so staying calm and straightforward can help.
- Accept that extra screening might happen and focus on enjoying your trip.
