Blending Veggies for Ileostomy - NutriBullet Experiences?

This topic is about finding ways to safely enjoy vegetables after having an ileostomy, especially if you're concerned about blockages. The person sharing their experience has had an ileostomy since 2015 and has faced blockages, possibly due to scar tissue. They are considering using a NutriBullet or a similar blender to make vegetables easier to digest but are unsure if this will help with the fiber issue.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Thoroughly chew or blend your food: Many people emphasize the importance of chewing well or blending vegetables into a thick soup or slurry, as softer textures are easier to pass.

2. Experiences with NutriBullet:
- It works well for most fruits and vegetables but might not fully break down harder items like flaxseed. It can become noisy after regular use.
- Consider more durable machines like a Vitamix or Ninja, or look for older full-size blenders second-hand, as they tend to have longer-lasting blades.

3. Juicer versus blender:
- If fiber is a concern, a masticating juicer can remove about 90% of the pulp, leaving you with nutrient-rich juice. Recommended models include the Hurom Upright and Omega-type VRT.
- Some people prefer high-power blenders because they retain the vitamins in the skin and pulp, as long as the result is a smooth purée.

4. Diet guidelines:
- Follow the "4 S's" from one surgeon: Soft, Squishy, Slushy, Slurries.
- Be cautious with common blockage-causing foods like long-fibered vegetables (green beans, celery, kale, arugula), raw carrot strips, mushrooms, onion slices, apple/orange pulp, and pizza crust.
- Some people with ostomies reduce insoluble fiber and focus on protein (like meat and peanut butter) and easily digested starches (such as potatoes and white bread).

5. Stay hydrated:
- Drink plenty of fluids, aiming for about 2 liters of electrolyte drinks (like G2 Gatorade or homemade versions) plus an additional 2 liters of other fluids daily.
- A small amount of prune juice (6 oz) can help relieve early blockages.

6. Medication and supplements:
- Blockages might be due to poor peristalsis rather than fiber. Domperidone has helped improve motility for some.
- Metamucil has been beneficial for others in moving food through the system.

7. Additional tips:
- Tolerances can change over time, especially with age or after gall-bladder removal, so reassess your food choices periodically.
- Clean your juicer or blender parts thoroughly to maintain their performance.
- The film "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" offers juicing ideas and motivation.
