What's the Average Size of a Mucus Plug with an Ileostomy?

This topic is about managing mucus plugs for someone with a temporary loop ileostomy, where the colon is still intact. The person experiences a strong urge to pass stool every week or two but struggles to expel the mucus plug because it is too large. They tried using warm coconut-water irrigation, which only released loose mucus, not the firm plugs. They are curious about the typical size of a mucus plug after 1–2 weeks without passage.

Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. DIY High-Volume Anal Irrigation:
- One person shared their method of using two anal catheters connected to a shower hose.
- The first catheter had its tip removed to create a straight, high-pressure jet for flushing the upper rectum.
- The second catheter had its tip intact, allowing water to exit through side holes, which helped clean the rectal walls with gentle twisting.
- This was done while standing in a bathtub to manage the large water outflow and observe the expelled mucus.
- They repeated this process for about six months, after which the hardened mucus plugs stopped forming, and the remaining mucus became clear and odor-free.
- A word of caution: This method is not recommended for someone with a recently operated anus due to serious risks. The person who shared this method was already experienced with anal irrigation and proceeded with great care.

2. Shared Experience:
- Another person with an ileostomy reported having the same difficulty with clearing mucus plugs. They confirmed that conventional methods often do not work, offering reassurance that this issue is common among those with similar conditions.
