Summer Ostomy Care: Dealing with Sweat, Burns, and Infections

This topic is about managing skin issues related to having an ostomy during the hot summer months. When it's warm, sweating can cause painful burning and infections around the stoma, and it can be challenging to keep the ostomy appliance securely in place. Here are some helpful tips to care for your skin and ensure your ostomy system stays put:

1. Try the "crusting" technique: Lightly dust the irritated skin with an ostomy or healing powder, like Arglaes, and then seal it with a skin-barrier spray. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times, alternating between powder and spray. This method helps the wafer stick while soothing and drying the skin.

2. Let your skin breathe: Before applying a new wafer, leave the pouching system off for about 15 minutes to allow the area to air out. This can help reduce moisture-related irritation.

3. Check for allergies: If you suspect an allergy to the barrier material, consider switching to tape-free, solid hydrocolloid barriers. These can help eliminate burning and itching caused by adhesive allergies.

4. Adjust barrier wipes seasonally: Use Cavilon barrier wipes most of the year, but switch to Sensi-Care or Brava wipes during the hot months to reduce heat-related skin reactions. Keep in mind that you might need to order these from a different supplier.

5. Remove adhesives gently: Hot weather might shorten the wear time of your wafer, leading to more frequent changes. Be gentle when removing adhesives to avoid creating large, itchy chemical burns that can take weeks to heal.

6. General tip: Sweating can loosen wafers, so use a skin-barrier spray over any protective powder and allow it to dry completely. This helps maintain adhesion and reduces leaks, which can further damage the skin.
