Tips for Ostomate Butt Care - Protecting Skin from Mucous

This topic is about managing and protecting the skin around the perianal area from irritation caused by rectal mucous after ostomy surgery. Even though the rectum is not used after surgery, it can still produce mucous, which may lead to skin irritation, especially for those who are active and sweat a lot. Here are some helpful tips and advice to prevent or treat rashes caused by this mucous:

1. Non-prescription ointments:
- Rectal Care cream can relieve soreness and protect the skin and is available without a prescription.
- Vitamin A & D Ointment, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, and zinc oxide are effective barrier creams to use once a rash is present.

2. Antibacterial/antimicrobial option:
- Anasept Gel or Spray is antibacterial and antimicrobial, effective against MRSA and C. diff. Apply it after bathing, let it dry, and then use a barrier wipe or appliance. It is available online and costs around $29 for a 3-oz tube or spray.

3. Absorbent materials and positioning:
- Use incontinence pads with a rolled piece of toilet tissue to gradually wick mucous into the pad and prevent it from running down the legs.
- 4 × 4 gauze pads are recommended as they are stronger and more absorbent than toilet paper or cotton balls.
- Feminine sanitary pads (ultra-thin, overnight/super-long with wings) can be worn slightly farther back than usual and secured with snug bikini-style or low-rise briefs that sit below the stoma. This works for both men and women on days with heavy mucous.

4. Cleaning techniques:
- Consider installing a bidet seat or attachment, as the gentle water spray is less irritating than wiping.
- Use only very soft toilet paper, such as Charmin or Member’s Mark from Sam’s Club, and avoid cheap, rough brands.
- Alcohol-free flushable moist wipes can eliminate friction and are useful for cleaning the ostomy area during pouch changes.

5. Miscellaneous tips:
- Avoid dry wipes that don’t absorb and toilet tissue that disintegrates.
- If shopping access is limited, facial tissues can be used in a pinch.
