I was gifted my ostomy via a colostomy on September 19, 2025. I have suffered from ulcerative colitis for 20 years and more recently diverticulitis. I am reflecting on how my life has changed. I lost 30 pounds and actually am happy about that! I had several abdominal abscesses and think some of that weight was from the infection. I had not felt well most of the summer and am enjoying feeling more healthy. The headaches and chills and fever are gone. The pain from diarrhea and constipation are gone.

I have adapted well to the use of the ostomy bag and change every third day. My husband still helps with changing, although I can do it on my own. I am still careful about what I eat. I eat mostly softer foods and not a lot at a time. If I eat more, I just feel uncomfortable especially at night. So many times, I skip the evening meal. But, food tastes so much better than before surgery. My favorites are chicken and noodles, I add peas and carrots to it for a little fiber. I also love mashed potatoes with butter and melted cheese. I had not eaten sherbet in years, but forgot how much I loved and have added that for a snack. I have eggs for breakfast and yogurt for a mid-morning snack. Another favorite is pasta and my homemade tomato sauce. I try to focus on foods that digest easily that I like and not think about what I should not eat like sweet corn, popcorn and nuts. We have always eaten out a lot, but not so much now. It is more difficult to find foods that are not fried. I always enjoyed a beer and a burger, but found I get along just fine without alcohol.
The best part is not worrying about accidents. I really thought I would spend the rest of my life looking for a bathroom or cleaning up the mess! My only leakage was after a shower when I did not check the seal or put the belt back on. I am a candidate for reversal, but am not convinced I want to deal with colitis problems again.

I had a wonderful home health nurse and wound nurse that assisted in the first few months after the surgery.

This forum has been awesome! I have read many of the posts and learned so much and enjoy the humor also. I look forward to reading further posts as a part of this community. What has been the biggest change in your life?

Very helpful

Hi. I'm pretty new too. Got my little red friend in Feb this yr after really bad colitis. I am on v strong pain relief and have spent nearly 30yrs with constipation pains, I will never suffer that again thankfully. That's the main change for me. Apart from now having to chew my food 🙃 🤣

Best wishes

Tony☺️☺️

Geekyjen,

Thanks for the reply.  I will be seeing my doctor on Friday and mention Entyvio.  I did not remain paralyzed for more than 2 days, but it was terrible and I was so scared.  The doctors just used alot of xanax and other drugs like that to UN paralyze my joints that were being attacked by the remicade.  Turns out I have been diagnosed with LUPUS. It is attacking my nervous system.  I had ulcerative colitis in 1996 and they had to remove my colon.  Had a J pouch for 10 years, until it started failing.  I then got a permanent iliosomy, and I suffer from severe chronic diareha, and I dehydrate frequently.  I recently had a proctectomy, and that is when the new autoimmune disorder, Lupus, appeared.  I have had two hospital stays now because of the blisters and the paralyzing incident.  I will be dealing with this forever now.  I have just been working on acceptance.

I love this website because of wonderful people like you!

G-Day Behlers,

Isn't it great to see the end of the Ulcerated colitis, I am so happy for you.

You will be OK, and If you are managing as well as you say you may be better off not going for a reversal.

Regards IGGIE
