Recovery Time for Sitting After Proctectomy Surgery

The topic is about the recovery process after a proctectomy, which is the surgical removal of the rectum and anus. This can be a challenging time, especially when it comes to sitting comfortably and managing the healing process. Here are some helpful insights and advice for those going through this recovery:

1. Typically, the incision should be closed by around 3 months, but achieving full comfort might take a bit longer.
2. Using a soft cushion can make sitting more comfortable. Many people find they need this for the first few months and may continue to avoid hard chairs even years later.
3. If you are using very thick pads, they might press on the incision. Switching to a thinner bandage or pad can help relieve this pressure.
4. Once the initial healing is complete, long car or plane rides are usually manageable.
5. It is generally safe to take a warm bath after the incision is fully closed. Adding a towel or cloth in the tub can enhance comfort.
6. Some people find they can sit even before the stitches are removed, as long as the seat is well-padded.
7. It's common to experience ongoing or "phantom" pain for several months. While gradual improvement is typical, activities like biking or horseback riding might remain uncomfortable for up to a year or more.
8. Scar tissue can stretch and cause discomfort during physical activities, such as pregnancy, but this usually doesn't indicate a problem with healing.
