Recovery and Return to Work After Rectum Removal Surgery?

This topic is about preparing for recovery and returning to a desk job after undergoing surgery for the removal of the rectum and anus, often referred to as "Barbie Butt" surgery. The person sharing their experience is concerned about the pain, care after surgery, and especially the timeline for getting back to work. Here are some helpful tips and insights from others who have been through similar experiences:

1. Recovery and Return-to-Work Time
- Surgeons often suggest a 4-week recovery period for light office duties. However, personal experiences vary, with some returning in 1–2 weeks and others taking up to 7 weeks. Healing of the incision can continue for 1–6 months.
- It's important not to rush back to work. If the incision feels tight, sore, or swollen, take extra time to heal.

2. Sitting and Cushions
- Using a hemorrhoid or air cushion, a simple pillow, or a gel-filled seat pillow can help reduce pressure on the wound.
- Regularly shift your weight and take breaks to stand or walk to relieve pressure.

3. Padding and Dressings
- Thick hospital pads may press on the incision, so consider using thin folded gauze instead.
- Band-Aid 2 × 2 inch gauze pads are recommended for their softness and should be changed with each restroom visit.
- Small pantyliners or folded gauze can help absorb any seepage.

4. Cleaning and Skin Care
- Use mild or antibacterial soap and water, and gently pat the area dry.
- Avoid creams or Tucks wipes as they may irritate sutures.
- A hand-held hair dryer on a cool or warm setting can help keep the area dry.
- Epsom-salt baths can ease soreness and help prevent infection. Polysporin may be used on small irritations if advised by a healthcare professional.

5. Pain and Normal Sensations
- Expect soreness for 3–4 weeks. Burning, itching, or "bearing-down" sensations are common and may last for months but usually decrease over time.
- Hard lumps along the incision may appear but often resolve in 4–5 months.
- Tailbone pain and discharge, including vaginal bleeding in women, can occur early on. Heat pads can provide relief.

6. Activity, Fitness, and Weight
- Light walking is beneficial for circulation, but listen to your body and rest when needed.
- Some suggest losing weight before surgery for faster healing, but maintaining or gaining a few pounds might be helpful as appetite can decrease post-surgery.

7. Bladder and Sexual Function
- Temporary difficulty urinating may occur. Running warm water over your hand while sitting can help trigger urination and avoid the need for re-catheterization.
- Most people report a return to normal sexual function, though initial sensations may differ. Discuss nerve-sparing techniques with your surgeon if concerned.

8. Helpful Products
- Consider using a hemorrhoid cushion, air cushion, standard pillow, or a gel-filled seat pillow.
- Band-Aid brand 2 × 2 gauze pads and Polysporin antibiotic ointment can be useful.
- Epsom salt and aloe-vera gel are also recommended, while Tucks wipes should be avoided.

9. General Mindset
- Recovery varies greatly from person to person. A positive attitude, patience, and staying in touch with stoma nurses for support and supplies can make the process smoother.
