Adjusting Jeans to Accommodate a Stoma

This topic is about finding ways to adapt button-front jeans, capris, and shorts so that the closure doesn't press on a stoma. If you have a stoma and find that the button and zipper of your pants are causing discomfort, here are some helpful suggestions to make your clothing more comfortable:

1. Ready-made extenders:
- Consider using "Elastic Pants Waist Extender, 5-Pack" available on Amazon.
- "Belly Belts" found in the maternity section at Target can also be useful.

2. Simple DIY fixes:
- Create a small elastic-cord loop, similar to a hair tie, to connect the button and hole, providing an extra 1–3 inches of space.
- Use narrow elastic cording or elastic button-loop tape for a similar effect.

3. Sewing solutions to keep your current pants:
- Sew a stretch panel, either V- or U-shaped, beside or across the zipper area. You can find stretch fabrics and pre-made panels online and in fabric stores.
- The "Prym Dritz Maternity Panel" available at Joann.com (product #1035781) can be stitched into existing jeans to create a soft, stoma-friendly front.
- The website Stomaatje (stomaatje.com/clothing.html) offers step-by-step photos for inserting stretchy fabric next to the fly.

4. Buying clothing that already works:
- Look for jeans or capris with built-in elastic at the waist, or consider buying one size larger and wearing them higher on the torso.
- Maternity pants often feature a soft front panel that avoids the stoma area.
- Belk stores offer the "Alia" line of pants and capris with tummy panels that many ostomates find comfortable.
- High-cut waists, skirts, and dresses are generally more comfortable around the stoma area.
