Sharp Pain Behind Ileostomy Incision One Year Later

This topic is about someone experiencing a sudden, sharp pain behind their ileostomy incision a year after their surgery. They are concerned about whether this pain might be due to scar tissue or an obstruction, and they are anxious about the possibility of needing another surgery in the same area. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Check if there are any changes in your stoma output, such as volume, consistency, or frequency. A decrease in output or a high-volume watery output along with pain might indicate an obstruction or a developing stricture.

2. From personal experience:
- One person experienced persistent pain, cramping, and minimal output for seven months following an emergency ileostomy.
- After undergoing multiple CT scans, a severe stricture was discovered, which had narrowed the stoma to a pin-hole. This required a second emergency surgery to create a new stoma.
- Following the revision surgery, their output returned to normal, and their overall health improved significantly. Delaying treatment could have been life-threatening.
- The key takeaway is that if the pain is significant or if your output decreases, it is crucial to seek prompt medical assessment. Early intervention is much safer than waiting, even if it means another surgery might be necessary.
