Partial Blockage Concerns with Ileostomy

My husband has had an ileostomy for two months. The doctor said there are no dietary restrictions. He's feeling pain to the right of the wafer (his right) and he's burping. He is slightly nauseated. There is output, but it's somewhat watery. Partial blockage?

I have given him tips seen here: heating pad, knees to chest, water intake, etc.

Thoughts are welcome.

I've seen a can of full-sugar Coke recommended as well.

If the pain becomes debilitating, he needs to go to the hospital ASAP.

Great site..I have had an colostomy over 30 years..and have been thru skin rash around my stoma,hernias(2), leaks, odor control , needed clothing suggestions and this site has helped me with recommendations and many ideas worked!
I wish it was around 30 years ago. Thank you everyone!

Go get it checked out; sounds like a blockage.

For a doctor to say you have no food restrictions is giving you very bad information. Ileostomies do have food restrictions: nuts, corn, fruit with hard skin, vegetables like mushrooms, and you can go on and on. Some people on here say they can eat anything; personally, I think they are playing Russian roulette.

Nausea, burping - I'd suggest getting it checked out. Hubby has an ileostomy with no diet restriction - I'd seriously review that as well. Good luck. Please keep us informed about how he is doing. 🌈

If he starts throwing up, then you need to go to the ER at once, or if the pain gets too intense. That would signal a full blockage. The important thing is to keep calm. These things happen from time to time. Try the things you mentioned. Try walking around and changing position. You can try the Coke thing if you want. You can try something like prune juice to get things moving. If he has some output, that is a good sign. But if the output turns clear or cloudy/clear, then you are dealing with a blockage. When I had my total blockage, my output started to look like water or cloudy water. I ended up going to the ER and spent four days in the hospital with an NG tube in. It was not the most fun I have had.

NG tubes are so not the latest in fall fashion; don't think they'll make it for spring, either! Can relate - - -

Post-op, my surgeon said I had no dietary restrictions, but she meant that I'd have to learn for myself. Sometimes I can enjoy a nice salad; other times I can barely tolerate the BRAT diet. Hoping for more consistency as my journey continues, though shooting peas out of my stoma had some entertainment factors!

Absolutely

Learn over time what suits one personally - we are all different.

With careful management over time, one can safely widen one's diet... and also pull back as the need arises.

Good luck - don't be afraid to try stuff on an individual, try a small amount as a sole new addition - and see how it pans out [literally].
