Traveling with a Medical Pouch: US and Cruise Experiences

Traveling with an ostomy pouch, whether by air or sea, can seem daunting, especially when considering airport security in the United States or going on a cruise. Here are some helpful tips and insights to make your journey smoother:

1. Obtain a travel/medical certificate:
- You can download a free certificate from the TSA website (tsa.gov) or get a printable form from cmostomysupply.com. Present this to the TSA officer for a more discreet screening process.
- Some airlines might ask for a medical certificate, while others may not.

2. Scissors are not allowed in carry-on luggage:
- Even small curved ostomy-pouch scissors should be packed in checked baggage. Alternatively, you can pre-cut your supplies before your flight.

3. Screening procedure at U.S. airports:
- Be prepared for a special pat-down. Officers will explain each step and maintain respect throughout the process.
- You may be asked to swipe your own hand over the pouch, after which the officer will swab your hand to check for explosive residue. Officers are not allowed to touch the pouch itself.

4. Always carry ostomy supplies in your cabin bag:
- Checked luggage can sometimes be delayed or lost, so it's best to keep your supplies with you.

5. Cruising:
- Travelers report no issues related to ostomies during embarkation or while on board. The extra space and freedom of movement on a cruise can make managing your pouch easier than on a plane.

6. General experience:
- Many travelers with colostomies or urostomies have flown both domestically and internationally, and have cruised around the world without any problems. Just follow the security rules and enjoy your trip.
