Embracing a New Life - My Journey with a Colostomy - Surgery Moved Up!

This topic is about someone who recently had their colostomy surgery moved up from the 30th to the 16th. They are looking forward to leaving behind 2½ years of pain and discomfort and are eager to embrace a more active lifestyle after the surgery.

Here are some details and advice shared by the community:

- The surgery took place on Thursday, August 16, 2018, and they were discharged by Sunday. As of Monday, August 20, they are experiencing soreness and swelling in the torso and are concerned about these symptoms. They are waiting to consult with a stoma nurse.

- They have some regrets about switching from a previously healed ileostomy to a new colostomy, as the appliance location and application process are now unfamiliar, being on the left side instead of the right.

- There is a noted reduction in rectal pain, but they are experiencing a small amount of bloody mucus discharge, which they remember from past experiences and hope will resolve soon.

- Despite feeling overwhelmed, they are grateful for the support from the community.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. Many community members have offered encouragement, best wishes, and reminders that recovery will improve over time.

2. It is suggested to ask the surgeon for a stoma that is at least 1 inch long to help with better drainage and appliance fitting.

3. Patience is key; healing takes its own time and cannot be rushed.

4. Once healing is complete, consider colostomy irrigation to make daily management easier and gain more predictable control.

5. Life can return to normal, and even adventurous activities like traveling and snorkeling are possible after full recovery. This reassurance comes from an ileostomy user of 31 years.

6. Staying connected with the forum can provide ongoing support and encouragement whenever needed.
