Caution - Marathon No-Sting Skin Barrier Allergy & Removal Issues

This topic is about dealing with skin irritation and allergies related to using the Marathon No-Sting Skin Barrier. The person sharing their experience found that instead of helping, the product made their skin condition worse due to an allergic reaction. They also noted that removing the product was quite challenging, which added to their discomfort. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Be cautious with skin barriers:
- Some people find that liquid or film skin barriers don't offer much benefit. In fact, they can sometimes make flanges or one-piece pouches stick less securely.
- Try to reduce how often you change your appliance, aiming for every 3 to 5 days if you use a two-piece system, to minimize skin trauma.

2. Consider alternative no-sting preparations:
- Smith & Nephew No-Sting Skin Prep is recommended as a gentler option. Even those with very sensitive skin have reported no adverse reactions. You can request samples from the manufacturer or through supply companies.

3. Try the powder/film "crusting" technique:
- Use Convatec Stomahesive Powder while the skin prep is still wet to create a protective "crust." This can help with healing and improve the seal of your wafer. Many have found this method to be effective over the long term.

4. Adopt additional skin-friendly practices:
- Avoid soaps with moisturizers or fragrances, as they can leave residues that interfere with adhesion.
- Witch hazel has been soothing for some, though it might sting if your skin is already inflamed.
- For severe irritation, consider leaving the area appliance-free for up to 24 hours. Cleanse with antibacterial soap, apply Desitin Extra Strength (a zinc-oxide ointment), and then reapply a wafer after a few hours. You can also use a pouch secured with exterior tape while sleeping to prevent leaks.

These insights and suggestions might help you manage skin irritation more effectively and find products that work better for your skin.
