Dirty Filter Dilemma - Ostomy Bag with Fecal Stains - Seeking Advice

This topic is about a user’s experience with the Coloplast Sensura Mio one-piece pouch, specifically issues with the filter becoming stained and causing pancaking. The user is seeking advice on whether this is normal and if there are better alternatives. Here are some insights and suggestions shared by others:

1. The staining and clogging of the filter are common issues with the Sensura Mio pouch. Many users have noticed that the filter can block after the first use, making it difficult to clean and sometimes causing odor.

2. Switching to a two-piece system might be beneficial. Some recommended options include Coloplast two-piece pouches 11124 and 10011. These systems are praised for their ease of use, and they allow for easier bag changes. They also help reduce pancaking because you can release excess air or choose pouches without filters.

3. Consider using pouches without a filter. Keeping a little air inside the pouch can prevent the vacuum effect that leads to pancaking.

4. There are opaque, fabric-covered Sensura Mio two-piece pouches available. These can hide the output, although some users prefer clear pouches for visibility.

5. For added security, some users attach wafers to separate baseplates, reinforce them with belts, and use spray-on medical adhesive.

6. While irrigation is suggested for descending or sigmoid colostomies to prevent pancaking, it is not suitable for ileostomies. Therefore, solutions specific to ileostomies may be needed.
