My Journey Through Ostomy Reversal and Recovery

This topic is about a personal journey through multiple ostomy reversals and the recovery process that followed. It shares the experiences and challenges faced during this medical journey, offering insights and encouragement for others who might be considering or undergoing similar procedures.

- The journey began with an emergency surgery due to a perforated colon caused by diverticulosis. This led to the removal of 30 cm of the colon and the creation of a colostomy.
- Six months later, an attempt was made to reverse the colostomy. However, complications arose, necessitating further colon resection and the creation of an ileostomy.
- Managing the ileostomy was challenging, resulting in severe weight loss and hospitalization due to critically low sodium levels.
- Three months after the ileostomy, a laparoscopic reversal was performed. This procedure was much easier to recover from compared to the previous open surgeries.
- Post-operative bowel function began on the third night with liquid output, followed by unexpected constipation, which was relieved with prune juice.
- Initially, the output frequency was about 30 times a day, but it decreased to 4–8 times a day within a week. After three months, the frequency ranged from 1–6 times a day, depending on diet.
- There were no accidents beyond the early weeks, and there was an improvement in weight and overall health.
- The author remains vigilant for potential complications such as scarring-related blockages or incisional hernia.
- They express strong satisfaction with being free from the ostomy bag and encourage others considering reversal to trust their surgeon and be patient during the recovery process.
