Redness and Bleeding Around Stoma - Need Advice!

Living with an ostomy for nearly a decade, you might have experienced changes in the appliances you use. Sometimes, these changes can lead to issues like redness and bleeding around the stoma, especially if the new system doesn't fit as snugly as the old one. If you're dealing with this, here are some friendly tips and insights to help you find a better fit and protect your skin:

1. Ensure the wafer is truly cut-to-fit:
- Consider cutting your own opening to match the exact shape of your stoma, which might be oval rather than round.
- You can ask your supplier for un-cut wafers or those with a smaller starter hole to customize the fit better.

2. Fill the gap with barrier material:
- Use moldable barrier rings or convex barrier rings to fill the space between the stoma and the wafer. This can help shield your skin from output.
- Many people find that using these barriers stops the redness.

3. Add skin-protective layers:
- Apply skin-barrier sprays or wipes and stoma powders to form an extra protective film before putting on the wafer.
- Use these products sparingly to ensure the wafer still adheres properly.

4. Use zinc-oxide ointment for quick healing:
- A thin layer of diaper-rash cream containing zinc, like "Butt Paste," can be helpful. Apply it, followed by a barrier wipe and a little powder before attaching the wafer.

5. Consider a soft silicone or rubber stoma collar:
- A stoma collar can direct output straight into the pouch, keeping it off your skin and allowing irritation to heal.

6. Remember why a tight fit matters:
- Ileostomy output contains digestive enzymes that can harm unprotected skin. Ensuring a snug fit or filling in any gaps is crucial to prevent burning and bleeding.

These suggestions aim to help you find comfort and protect your skin, making your ostomy experience a bit easier.
