I have had my ileostomy for 52 years, and over the last few years, my stoma has become even with my skin. I am having problems keeping a pouch on for more than a few hours at a time. The skin around my stoma is red and sore. Any suggestions.

Hi MA,

Are you using a convex barrier or convex sealing ring?

It is not as simple as a convex barrier. You can get a minor revision to pull it out a bit. I have done that when I was in the exact same situation. The surgery is about 1 - 2 hours. It was a one-day stay in the hospital and then I was able to resume my normal activities one week later. I never had any problems after that.

Tickpol

Start with a convex barrier.

Add a ring and mold it to match the stoma opening.

Remain stationary (or at minimum avoid bending at the waist) for 15 minutes to let the ring warm and adhere to your abdomen.

These two options should force a better seal.

Now for the skin...

Pat the skin around the stoma with dry toilet paper to sop up any weeping.

Apply Adapt stoma powder and brush away excess.

Apply skin adhesive prep (comes in wipes) by patting not wiping.

Let dry.

Repeat.

This is called crusting.

Then put on the ring and then the barrier.
