I have had my ileostomy for 52 years and over the last few years my stoma has become even with my skin.  I am having problems keeping a pouch on for more than a few hours at a time.  The skin around my stoma is red and sore.  Any suggestions.

Hi MA,

Are you using a convex barrier or convex sealing ring?

I began my Urostomy life February 27th, 2023...a month and a half ago. I stumbled upon this site from another on Youtube and website called VeganOstomy and between that site and this one, most of my fear and worry of not having any answers other than calling the Dr's office recording menu and hoping to hear back in the next day or two for an answer to leaks, skin irritations etc, or just feeling alone and the "no one understands" thoughts I had to look forward to in my mind were all put to rest by these two websites and the community here at MaO!! I have been here for a few weeks now, and the help and support offered by the members here is just amazing!! The information and support is absolutely priceless for anyone recently out of their surgery and have tons of questions or had it for years...sit down...have a good read and you will see for yourself!!

it is not as simple as a convex barrier. You can get a minor revision to pull it out a bit. I have done that when I was in the exact same situation. The surgery is about 1 - 2 hours. It was a one day stay in the hospital and then I was able to resume my normal activities one week later. I never had any problems after that.

Start with a convex barrier.

Add a ring and mold it to match the stoma opening.

Remain stationary (or at minimum avoid bending at the waste) for 15 minutes to let the ring warm and adhere to your abdomen.

These two options should force a better seal.

Now for the skin...

pat the skin around the stoma with dry toilet paper to sop up any weeping.

apply Adapt stoma powder and brush away excess

apply skin adhesive prep (comes in wipes) by patting not wiping.

Let dry

repeat.

This is called crusting.

Then put on the ring and then the barrier.
