Please help
I have  trouble with my hollister wafer. The problem is that I live in extreme tempertures in the summer months. I have  "diaper rash" under my wafer. it is painful and also interfers with the adhesion of the wafer. olease help me, this did not happen last year for some reason, maybe I can blame it in "global warming". it is 112 degrees right now with a dew point of 55%. Thank you

Hi - could also be you have a fungal infection under your wafer - suggest you have a word with your stoma nurse if you have one .....?

The powders are pretty good too to help with that, just make sure you dust off the excess before applying the wafer.

Hope that helps a bit?

Hello there
The next time you change your wafer try rubbing a thing coat of Milk of Magnesia over the red area, let it dry & then put on the new wafer.  I think that you will find this will help.
Good luck.

Hi       I've had lots and lots of problems with red irritated skin. A nurse who had been practicing for years suggested concentrated calamine lotion. Poor off the excess liquid from the top of the bottle then apply with a q-tip all around the stoma, let dry. I use a blow dryer to get it good and dry then apply wafer.  It has worked for my, I keep the bottle of calamine in my stash of necessary stoma supplies. Hope this helps....Cathy

Hi AuntSusu - sounds like you have a fungal infection as Rach said.  Is it extremely itchy as well as red?  I get the same thing with the Hollister wafers, and at first I thought I was allergic to the tape.

What works best for me (especially with any recent antibiotic use) is to take an anti-fungal medication for 2 weeks to let skin heal up.  Then I use a skin barrier prep pad, put an Eakins seal on (to deter any leakage) then the Hollister barrier.

If you use a hair dryer only use the "cool" setting.  And make sure your shower or bath water isn't too warm.  You may also have to change your wafer every two days in really hot weather if you perspire a lot.  It's a comination of heat, wet and the fungal infection that makes the skin so miserable.  Think DRY and COOL!

It sounds like you need to bring this to the attention of a trusted doctor or ostomy nurse ASAP! I can't imagine having a sore rash beneath the wafer of a bag - that must be SO painful!

The good news is that there all many remedies for skin breakdown, irritation, and rashes. You just need to be examined by the right people in order to get what will work best for you.

For Aunt SuSu.My stoma nurse suggested a prescription cream to rub on rash area. Then rub some stoma powder over cream, then spray a medical adhesive on skin and on the wafer that sticks to your skin. Let dry around five minutes. Then put duoDerm tape around the stoma (cut into four pieces before you begin your procedure) and put your wafer on over the duoDerm tape. Hope this makes sense. It has helped me. I work outside and it gets hot and muggy here in NC. Good luck.
