Hi everyone, I have a question; hopefully, someone can help me.
I had my emergency colostomy on Feb 21 last year. Since the surgery, I have bladder problems with leakage; I don't know why. I had severe pain in the beginning, and they wouldn't tell me what was wrong in the hospital. They said I needed surgery. Well, I thought it was corrective surgery and would only be in for a couple of days. I woke up seven days later with a bag and thought someone glued it to me. I got the shock of my life, but it upset me that nobody said a word to me. They never even called my husband to tell him I was in the hospital; he thought I left him. My bladder just lets go without any push; many times I don't even feel anything. Could it be damaged? I found out I had diverticulitis and diverticulosis together and a cancerous growth. This situation is embarrassing so much.

Hi there ....

Has this leakage been since the surgery, or was that what you went in for initially? I couldn't quite make out the timeline there.

If it is since the surgery, what surgery did you go in for in the first place?

Angelica- As usual, you've written another interesting post. February 5th, 2019, was my reversal surgery after having an ileo for 6 months. I'm one of those fortunate success stories. Of course, things are different now, and I still have to be careful about what and how much I eat, as I don't have a colon. At first, I was afraid to leave the house. My biggest fear was having to use a public bathroom and have the toilet not flush! Even now, when I know that I'll be in someone else's home, I won't eat anything beforehand. I read other people's stories and sometimes feel guilty for having had it so easy, not to mention that I have a significant other who is 100 percent supportive. I've gotten so much out of this website and truly feel for those of you who have it so much worse than I. But I feel it necessary to let folks hear about the success stories.

WARNING: Sorry about the capitals; I'm using my phone! Well, before I can get a real understanding, I need to know if the bladder issue is after having emergency surgery in February 2010! I'll tell you a little about me. I again had emergency surgery on June 30, 2010, due to cancer, so I now have an ileostomy. I've managed it pretty well, I think! Going back to the bladder, since I had surgery to remove my rectum in December, I've had a weak bladder and have to wear panty liners. But I'm laying in the hospital now; I've had a pain in the left side of my body near the scar. They have no idea what's causing it either! =( They have found a cyst on my ovaries, though. =( Well, enough about me. If you ever need to chat, I'm here! XX

Hi Legionbarb,
when I had my internal pouch operation, one of the first questions they asked was whether my bladder was working alright as they had cut very close to it. At the time, it was okay. Then, when I had the stoma several years later at a different hospital, it wasn't working so well. I asked about it, and they shrugged it off as being due to my age and suggested I contact a urologist, which I didn't do because I still think it was the operation and the fact that I have a hernia probably pressing on my bladder. It's not a major problem, thank goodness.

When I went by ambulance, nobody knew the problem, nor did I. All I knew was the pain was worse than labor pains. I've had the problem since surgery, and it hasn't stopped. Nobody told me anything; I learned later it was a colostomy, and that wasn't explained either. It's all been a blind alley for me. The nurses I see have helped me, but I still have this problem. I thought this was normal, but it's been too steady to be normal.

I've had urinary tract infections and sometimes complete urinary incontinence since my ostomy surgery on 2/09. My urologist at the time had to re-implant the ureters in a different part of the bladder and told me the nerves might never recover and I might have lifelong problems.

My current urologist says that is not true...after hundreds of doses of antibiotics, I may finally be over the UTIs and be able to have a "sling" placed under the bladder to hitch it up. Hooray! Meanwhile, it's been hundreds of $$ spent on Poise pads

Things he said to try: Kegel exercises, vitamin C at night, sit less, lose weight. Have tried them all!

Hi all!

I'm beginning to wonder if it's common to have bladder problems when you have a colostomy. Does anyone know? I had my bowel and anus removed in April 2009 due to cancer, and now I have severe leakage and just can't hold my urine like I used to. Once I couldn't get my pants down soon enough and had to sit and pee right through them. LOL. Very embarrassing, and I'm sure glad I was home. Another thing I keep getting are yeast infections. Is anyone else getting them too?

Take good care!
