My mom had an ileal conduit along with a hysterectomy on April 29th.  She is very swollen...legs, feet, and belly (looks like she is going to deliver a baby).  She can't get shoes on or her normal clothes.  How long can we expect this swelling to last?  She is 82 and cancer free as of this past week!!  Doing well otherwise.  Thanks.

I have an ileal conduit, and did not have any problem with swelling. It sounds like edema (excess fluid) which should be able to be taken care of with a diuretic. I'm more likely to suspect it is a complication from the hysterectomy. Has she talked to her doctor about it? The doc has to be the one to prescribe the diuretic, and it should be done as quickly as possible if it is affecting her whole body. If her regular doctor or her gynecologist won't give her the Rx, or fix the problem in some other way, take her to another doctor. I have a friend who had a problem with swelling throughout her body, and they put her into the hospital with a diuretic in an IV. She lost 17 pounds in a 24 hr period - all fluid.

Good luck.

New ostomate, we’ve all gone through feeling low and depressed over your ostomy.
This is a pretty open group. Right now, in summer, it’s a low response time—lots of family things going on. If you need something, call out. Someone dealing with your situation will post something sooner or later.
It’s just that time of year.
Take care, and good luck.

I had the same problem following an Ileal conduit cystectomy I was referred to a kidney specialist who diagnosed  nephrogenic  diabetes  insipidus.  Apparently the kidneys are not working properly following the operation and although I am passing lots of water he prescribed  Bendroflumethiazide which is a water pill. I have been on them for a month now and the oedema has gone down. I don’t know how long I will have to take them but if you ask to be referred to a kidney specialist I am sure they will be able to help.
Good luck
