Low Magnesium Problem

I had an ileostomy in March 2023 at Mayo in Jacksonville, FL. I am doing fine except for high output and low magnesium. I take two 400 mg magnesium oxide (crushed) per day and have to have an infusion of 2 mg each week. Sometimes I have to have two. If my magnesium is 1.5-1.8, I have 1 infusion, and if it is below 1.5, I have to have 2. Once it was 1.1, and I had to rush to the ER. My care team is at Mayo. This has been going on for months now, and I'm beginning to worry about infusions for life, etc. I sent a message to Mayo asking if we could change my magnesium tablets to a form that might absorb better. Has anyone experienced a problem such as this and were you able to overcome the problem? It sure is nice to be able to post comments with people who are in the same boat as me. Bless all of you.

I haven't had a problem to that extent, but my magnesium is right on the borderline between low and normal. I started out taking tablets but found my ostomy would spit out the powder and thus it was not being absorbed. I switched to liquid magnesium and I think things are going better, though still on the borderline.

Hello Harry,

See the above. I've used it for a decade. Read all the info on the website. Essentially, you put an amount in a liter or two of water and drink it over the day to spread it across the day and not take it all at once. Very easy.

Was your magnesium off before the ileostomy? Who do they have you working with now? GI doctor? Have they mentioned seeing one of their dietitians?

Don't know about Magnesium in the past. Looked back over lab records during the last 20 years and regular lab checks don't test for Mag. so have no record. Working with GI Dr. Dr. changed Med. (Omneprozole 20 mg) to Pepcid 20 mg and output has slowed. If this will hold it might help improve Mag. etc. Time will tell Thanks.
