Stoma Revision Experience and Recovery Tips?

Hello

I'm new here! I've had colostomy surgery at the end of May and already had two blockages. I actually started eating again and gaining back some of my weight. One of my reasons for the colostomy was constipation, so I am very concerned. The doctor is very supportive and feels the next step is a revision. I do not want to go back to the pain and depression. This is all very scary. I have slow transit, chronic pancreatitis, chronic malnutrition, pelvic floor dysfunction, and "my poop shoot" muscles do not work correctly. I also have other things going on. My revision is scheduled for Sept 4th. After, he wants to do more testing, and in the future, I may have a complete colectomy!

There is, of course, a lot more to my story, but I'm just looking for support for this next step in my journey... anyone have experience with a stoma revision? How long is the surgery? Post-op recovery?

Thanks for reading 🤗🌻🌞

Remember, you are in charge of what is done to your body. If it were me and your future is probably going to require you to go back and have more work done, I'd probably go for the final result and skip the middle stuff, especially if your poop muscles already don't work right.

Geekyjen,

Thanks for the reply.  I will be seeing my doctor on Friday and mention Entyvio.  I did not remain paralyzed for more than 2 days, but it was terrible and I was so scared.  The doctors just used alot of xanax and other drugs like that to UN paralyze my joints that were being attacked by the remicade.  Turns out I have been diagnosed with LUPUS. It is attacking my nervous system.  I had ulcerative colitis in 1996 and they had to remove my colon.  Had a J pouch for 10 years, until it started failing.  I then got a permanent iliosomy, and I suffer from severe chronic diareha, and I dehydrate frequently.  I recently had a proctectomy, and that is when the new autoimmune disorder, Lupus, appeared.  I have had two hospital stays now because of the blisters and the paralyzing incident.  I will be dealing with this forever now.  I have just been working on acceptance.

I love this website because of wonderful people like you!

Have you considered a second opinion from a motility expert? Do you irrigate? Why is the colostomy revision being done? If it is stenosis or prolapse, it might be effective. If your problem is a GI motility problem, you might still have problems with your colon and colostomy unless something else is done.

You might want to communicate with CrappyColon on this website.

Glimmer,

I had colostomy revision surgery this past spring (when my stoma was about 7 months old) and it was a walk in the park compared to all the previous stuff. I spent an overnight in the hospital and missed a total of 5 days of work. That said, we're all different and respond and recover at different rates.

I don't think revision is what you need. Revision is for refashioning the stoma, pulling it out, or shortening it.

I'm just talking here; confer with a colorectal doctor/surgeon. You probably need the colon removed, with a Ken Butt performed. It's unlikely revision will alleviate blockages, likely caused by poor motility. Good luck. Get a second opinion.

Hi, are you being seen at a research/teaching/university hospital? Please don't jump into another surgery without more testing on your colon. Do you know what tests you've had so far? There is a test that will show what sections of the colon have a motility dysfunction.
