Has anyone paralyzed had a reversal done that can give me insight into my future?

Hello,

There probably aren't many paralyzed ostomates on this website. Especially those who underwent reversal.

That being said, what issues concern you about reversal? Does your paralysis impede intestinal motility? Why did you get an ostomy?

Hopefully, other ostomates can provide some clarity about reversal.

Hello and welcome to meet an ostomate. The site charges a fee only for Full Membership, you can still interact with members here via the forums and the public chat room with free membership. The site charges a fee since it has expenses ... as do all websites, people have to spend their time to run and maintain the site, buy bandwith, servers, and other things. I am a life member here, it cost me 56$....about the price of 1 cup of coffee a week for a year. I think that is a very small charge for such a big reward. In my opinion this site is the best ostomy-related web site on the net. I hope you will stick around awhile and see for yourself. I do not own or am I in any manner connected to this site except as a member. regards. mmsh

I underwent a flap surgery to repair an ulcer on my bottom. They also performed a loop ileostomy to divert any fecal matter from the wound site, which would prevent it from healing.

If I were to get a reversal, my main concern is incontinence and whether or not my system will wake back up after 6 months of inactivity. My mobility issues make it difficult for me to combat multiple trips to the restroom. My flap surgery site is healed, yet I feel like the means by which I evacuate my waste (digital stimulation) and the frequent BMs, etc., will cause my skin flap progress to be "flushed down the drain." My scars are close to the anus, so I'm not certain it can handle the punishment.

Thank you for your response...

Your issues are unique. From what I've read about other ostomates' reversal experiences, it does take some time for the bowel to heal and "wake up." They spent much time in or near a bathroom.

That being said, many ostomates had a stoma because of underlying intestinal disease. In your case, the loop ileostomy was created to promote healing of an ulcer.

If you underwent reversal and the results were not good, you could always have the loop ileostomy recreated. Even in the best circumstances, reversal will cause major discomfort for a few weeks, then taper off as the intestinal system becomes normalized.

Consultation with a couple of surgeons would be a good idea. A second opinion is valuable in helping make an informed decision.
