Catheter Colonoscopy Prep Through Loop Ileostomy Pain

Had catheter inserted through loop ileostomy for colonoscopy prep. I was already having pain leading up to right under the stoma, but holy schneiki, it was painful. I went into shock and couldn't stop sweating and almost passing out, and luckily the nurse intervened and told the surgeon I was not looking so good. Why wouldn't pain sedation be administered prior to this? Am I the only one to experience this nightmare?

Good question about the pain medication. Ask your sloppy surgeon next time.

I was informed on here from a member that there are no nerve endings in a stoma. You could shove a finger up there and not feel anything.

Another member said there were nerve endings. She appeared to have had extensive biology schooling.

I don't know what to tell you, my friend. Even a regular scope, they knock you out.

Insist, demand it next time. The meds. You will need a driver to take you home though.

Maybe the pain you experienced is part of the symptoms you are having, requiring the scope.

You had a raw deal, man. Advocate for yourself.

In both of my cases, I had no choice. It was surgery or be put 6 feet under! I thank God that He has been with me all these times. Without Him, I never would have known what to do and might not have gone to the hospital when I did. I don't know if you have had your surgery or not yet but I hope you will hang out on this website when you are done. I have learned a great deal through the people here and it is so great having others who have had the same thing done and been through what you are about to or have gone through. The only thing I have turned down is a reversal of the ileostomy. When the doctors did the emergency rebuilding of my original ileostomy this last February, I told them I did not want to go through this again. My doctor told me at that time that I was no longer a candidate for the reversal. In a way, I was very relieved. The last three years of my life have been a nightmare for me. I do not want to go through any of it again. If you wish to be rehooked up and they say you are a good choice for that, research it carefully. Every surgery I have ever had except for Old and New Maxine and the emergency surgery on my broken foot, I have spent weeks researching. I recently had my C5 C6 disk in my neck replaced with an artificial one. I went to my pre-op with 2 pages of questions for the doctor. I knew everything that they were going to do and could talk intelligently with them. I always try to research my adversaries! Don't cancel your surgery. It is nice not to have to suffer any longer with horrible pain. We all had to change a few things around when we had our surgeries but in the long run, most of us are glad we did it. I know I am. Good luck to you!

Yowowch!!! I guess the good news is that it's over! Next, you will certainly be more inquisitive the next time a doctor wants to perform a medical procedure. Sometimes I feel like an experimental animal... this is probably why all those monkeys escaped that facility in S.C. Maybe seek a new doctor...

Ty warrior. Appreciate the feedback and you couldn't be more correct about self-advocacy. Learned that more than anything navigating our healthcare system.

Eeeeek! Oh no! So sorry that you experienced that level of pain. Grateful the nurse spoke up! I don't have a loop but I can relate somewhat. I had my first colonoscopy in 2003 when I flat lined in hospital. I woke up mid procedure and they couldn't drug me in that state so it was torture TBH. I know that helped me tremendously and created the advocate I am today. I demand sedation, I am a staunch advocate for my own best interest because no one else knows how we feel better than ourselves. Reach out anytime I'm always happy to support other ostomates in self advocacy.

I will also say that first colonoscopy was the only one that was THAT awful. Grateful to not have a colon for any more of those! We are strong individuals when we are fighting all this pain and still pushing ourselves. Speaking up only makes us stronger in our journey.

Hi. Pleasure to meet you, and I can't express my gratitude for your support. I've been throwing myself a mini pity party lately, but when I read and hear some other people's stories, I am humbled and quickly appreciate the things I do have. I am very sympathetic about how long and challenging your journey has been, but also inspired by you. The before and after photo is quite the contrast, and you look so much healthier, happier, and stronger. I would be honored to know you better and hear more of your story. I'm a musician and athlete and have played drums in bands for years. Kind of a metalhead but love classical and all music because I played piano and trumpet for many years as a youngster. But enough about me... I hope to hear back and hopefully be a support and inspiration for you as well.
