Unusual Skin Reactions with Wafer Use

Ok, so here it is. Sometimes my wafer comes up a little bit, but not so much that I need to change the wafer. And no poop escapes out. But I get these scabs there. And twice I have gotten a bubble on my skin that is filled with fluid, and when it pops, it bleeds and bleeds. I don't know what it is. I don't know how I get scabs where the barrier isn't sticking. I don't know what the bubbles are. I only get one at a time. One bubble. It's happened twice. The other time I put a barrier extender on, and I thought that caused the skin irritation, but it happened again, and I didn't put a barrier extender on it. Now my skin itches where the cab was, and I pulled it off. I put some skin protective wand stuff on it to protect it. It didn't sting, but it itches. I also put a band-aid over it and turned my wafer at an angle so it didn't touch the affected area. But I wish I knew what was causing the scabs and eaten-up skin and the bubble. So I could not do whatever it is again. Any ideas, anyone?

Have you thought about going to a dermatologist?

Without seeing it, I can't be sure. But it might be something like a blood blister. These are caused by trauma to the skin, and you're supposed to avoid popping them. However, when I've had them, they usually end up getting popped, and they bleed like crazy.

I never had one under my wafer, but if your wafer is pulling away from your skin, that might be trauma enough to cause it.

After popping a blood blister, you will get a scab.

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.

Sounds like a granuloma there, little bleeders—well, big blenders, really. I've known them to half-fill a bag with blood. If it is one, they're harmless. Google granuloma and see some photos of them; compare them to the ones you've had in the past.

Are any of your products new? Allergic reaction to new or sudden allergic reactions to old?

Nope, it doesn't look like any of the pictures I saw. But some of those pictures were shockingly gross.

No new supplies. Same old ones. I wonder if the act of the wafer coming up could cause it, like if water got in under the wafer from my shower or something and maybe caused an irritation or something. I am not sure. I am not at all sure.

It ended up popping anyway. I didn't do it on purpose. I think there is something to the fact that the wafer has come up because both times it happened was when the wafer had come up and then it happened.

I don't think it is that bad of a problem yet. Just really weird and annoying. It's only happened twice. It is just a little shocking to me that it happened.

I'm wondering if the wafer coming off is causing it too. It's very suspicious.

I think it is something like that. But I am not sure how it causes scabs and rough skin. It's like something streaked across my skin that had a blade attached to it. And then there is the bubble. It's always the two times anyway that the bubble coincides with the scraped skin. I think it is something to do with the wafer coming up; I just haven't figured out what exactly. Right now, I have a Band-Aid over my skin that is torn up, and it touches the corner of my wafer, so maybe it will keep the wafer from coming up as well as protect my injured skin. I can hope.
