Hi! I'm curious if anyone has any tips for changing a bag alone. Usually, it takes someone else to help with measurements and any extra flow while trying to change. My bags only last 2 to 3 days, and then they leak. Thanks.

Peace

G-Day Boat,

We all change our bags by ourselves. What is the main reason you need help for? You say for measurements; what do you mean?

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Urostomies are a pain to change. The urine flow basically never stops. So getting the skin clean and dry is hard.

How long have you had your urostomy? It sounds like it's still new and changing size. Things will get easier once it settles down. You can use the paper backing as a template for the next change.

Pick a time when you are a little dehydrated, like first thing in the morning before you've had coffee. In general, prep all your supplies before taking off the old appliance. Once your stoma settles, cut your wafer before taking off the old appliance. Apply the barrier ring to the wafer. One less step later.

Once the old appliance is off, devote one hand to hold the towel and catch urine. The other hand cleans around the stoma and uses barrier wipes. I use a blow dryer on low heat to speed it up. Once dry, move fast applying the wafer. Have a towel or bag positioned in case of accidents. With practice, you will get faster.

How far does your stoma stick out? About 1 inch is recommended. Mine is a bit recessed, and my stoma nurse said that was common with urostomies. If your stoma doesn't stick out enough, we can give advice that may improve wear time.

What kind of appliance are you using? Have you tried other brands? You should be able to get 3-4 days of wear time. I get 7 days. Let's make this chore less frequent.

A red solo cup will be your best friend with bag changes.
