Hey all,

Today I'm going to a local shellfish festival.  There will be tons of fresh seafood, chowder, etc. available for all in attendance.   They will also be serving raw oysters (one of my favorites!) but I haven't tried them since being diagnosed with Crohn's/getting my ileostomy in April.  Does anyone have any experience in eating oysters (cooked or raw) while having an ileostomy?

For what it's worth, my Crohn's is in remission right now, and there is hardly anything that gives my guts any trouble.  Any input would be great!

Have a nice weekend!

Logical,

Based on what I have eaten over 32 years with an ileo I say go for it. I have never had an adverse reaction to fish of any kind and I have eaten many raw oysters and clams over the years. Just last night I had a lobster/dungeness crab feast. So, try it. I guess I can really only speak for myself. Perhaps others have had  less pleasant experiences. But, I think in the end it is worth the try. Think of it as being one of life's big experiments. Good Luck and bon appetite.

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

I was told I'd risk blockages with seafood but have had no problems (and I've eaten pretty substantial portions of it at a sitting).  Like everything else, chew more than you used to and hope for the best.
