During the period in which I suffered UC, I of course spent a lot of time  " on the pot ".
This meant that I read an awful lot of books and other literature during this time.
Now, I do not read on the toilet any more and this has severely reduced my time spent reading and therefore educating myself.
This is another of life's little drawbacks with an ilostomy.

Nervous but excited about tomorrow. I have been reading some of the threads here and am brand new to the site. I am grateful to have had the ileostomy so my body had a chance to heal but am truly hoping all goes well with the operation and future.

I have a collapsed disk in my back and sleeping on it for the past 7 months because of the bag has caused me constant daily excruciating pain. I haven't slept through the night and have had so many accidents.

I am so glad I found this site. Gained so much information so I am much better prepared for what happens post operation and what worked for people diet and supplement (fiber) wise. Thank you for that.

I know the problem, but I compensated paper reading by internet reading.
If you´re looking for answers, then books are an extremely slow medium.
On the internet you type a word and you get access to millions of interesting pages to read.
Besides, books also contribute to acoustic pollution, together with your ileostomy going "pfrrrrrrt and prrrt prrrt prrrrrt" and your baggy "crack crack crack".
I think the combination of typing on a keyboard and a noisy ileostomy is much more pleasant for our ears.

I have to agree! I actually miss my "alone" time and doing my word searches....

Another drawback is, of course, when a toilet door has no lock.
When you're sat on the pot, you can normally stop the door with your foot, but when you're saying your prayers to the pot, it is very uncomfortable, not to say impossible to hang your bag over the pot, and stretch your foot out behind you to stop the door.
This becomes doubly difficult when the light doesn't work as well.
Trebly when there's no paper.
Unspeakable when there's nowhere to wash your hands.
