I have been home from hospital for 6 days.  In this time I have had two blockages.  This stumps me as I have only abut six inches remaining of colon.    I now have to take stool softener and Miralax daily.    I have never had problem with this prior to my ileostomy.   Now twice in a week is misery.      Is this usual after reversal?     My reversal has 4 anastomotic sites and tons of adhesions removed.    I hope you that have gone thru this can shed light on this.    Thank you

Hi Laura - I apologize no one ever answerred you - you may have worked this through already, but here goes:

YES, it will be tough at first.  I had a temp colostomy in 2003 with reversal - eventually had to go back in 2009 for permanent one due to massive adhesions and build up around the anastomoses.

It will take time, maybe months for you to find a comfortable way through your chopped up GI tract.  You should follow a modified ostomy diet for quite a while after the reversal just because your GI tract has been so insulted.  You may also have scar tisuue that keeps your intestines from moving fluidly (almost like snakes slithering around - weird image I know) so you  FEEL much more than other folks.  I would stick to soft, tropical fruits, cooked vegetables and sluable fiber foods such as oranges and oatmeal (hint: slice ends of oranges off, slice up and then slice the rounds in half - this will keep you from getting too much membrane bunched up which could block you up).

I ate a LOT of yogurt, either the Dannon variety with probiotics or Mountain High which has bifudus - the very best one!  Even if you are lactose-intolerant you should be able to eat yogurt and it will help the bacteria in your GI tract normalize - (remember all those massive doses of antibiotics for surgery wiped out your gut!)

These are my recommedations and if you need more help let me know!   I think most people with successful reversals drop off this site and that is why you never heard back.
