well, a little Mucus output is normal, but bleeding could be a sign of infection and  also cause the fequient "Phantom Bowel Movement" pains. I didnt get my rectum removed till about 6 yrs after my collectomy -I was intended to have a J-Pouch pull-thru but I had to have a permanent Ileostomy due to complications. I had all a huge problem with Mucus output from the Rectal stump, and when it would be a little Pink instead of clear/white -tyhat meant i had whats called Pouchitis -and so had to go on a week of antibiodics to clear it up.

Great place for newbies to learn, I have helped many folks on here learn to irrigate, plus learned a few tricks myself. Great informative site.

Hi Grommit - that sounds pretty normal to me for someone with a colostomy of 17 months.  I still have phantom urges in my rectal stump after 3 years, and bleeding on and off, which my surgeon says could be a small anal fissure, or just bloody mucus that normally collects in that area.

When the phantom pain/urge gets to be too much for me I use Anucort Hcl 25 mg suppositories which make a world of difference for me!  Also much cheaper than the Cortifoam products that do the same thing.

Grommit, I am 4 years post colostomy and 8 months ago started to develop recurrent infections in the rectum.  I have been told my uc has returned and it is recommended that I now have further surgery to remove the rectum.  It is normal to have a mucus discharge from the rectal stump but it should be clear or a cloudy white.  If coloured or bloody it usually signifies infection.
