I have psoriasis around the stoma and it is driving me crazy.  It itches and makes it difficult to get the appliance to stick to the skin.  Any ideas?

rtfrench,

I would speak to your ET nurse first and foremost.  I did look in the forums to see if anyone else has had this issue.  There could be a number of reasons why your skin is acting up from allergies to skin sensitivity.  I found a few posts on this and the link below seems to be the most informative.  You can always do a search in the google search field above.  Hope this helps.

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

No help from here but we have oddles of allergies in my house.

Break it down. . .

If the irritation is only where your bag attaches, blame the bag attachment.

Is it the glue? If you attach a bag to your back does your skin itch?

Is you skin flakey or itchy?

I just posted my technique for "crusting" that worked for me under "Crusting Problems."

I'm allergic to latex and most adhesives are based on latex. I would end up with pimply sores that then would get torn when I removed the appliance.

"Crusting" is a method of layering skin prep and stoma powder 2-4 times to produce a crystal like surface that protects the skin.

Good luck.
