Colostomy hernias causing nausea

This topic is about someone who has been living with a colostomy for 2½ years and is experiencing intermittent morning nausea, possibly due to multiple hernias. They are trying to figure out if this is a normal occurrence or if it's related to their hernias or stoma. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. The person has a complex medical history, including a bowel rupture, ICU stay, heart stent, IVC filter, and gall-bladder removal a year after the colostomy. They are 80 years old and have surgery scheduled in January to repair the six hernias. They chose not to have a colostomy reversal due to previous pain and complications. Their original diverticulitis was missed by a previous doctor, but they are now under the care of a new primary-care physician.

2. There is a possibility of reflux or a hiatus hernia:
- Having six abdominal hernias might indicate a tendency toward herniation. The nausea that improves when standing up could suggest a hiatus hernia and acid reflux rather than an issue with the colostomy itself.
- It is recommended to have a proper diagnostic work-up, such as an endoscopy or imaging, to confirm or rule out a hiatus hernia.

3. Managing reflux with gravity:
- Sleeping with the upper body elevated can help. One person mentioned buying an adjustable or tilting bed, which significantly reduced their morning nausea and reflux symptoms.

4. Medical follow-up is important:
- Persistent reflux can increase the risk of Barrett’s esophagus and eventually esophageal cancer. It is advised to consult a gastroenterologist to discuss reflux control and necessary surveillance.

5. Shared experiences:
- Another person with a long-term colostomy and a stoma-site hernia reported similar unexplained nausea without a clear pattern, highlighting the importance of individualized medical evaluation.
