Need tips for persistent thick stool - help!

This topic is about managing a temporary colostomy when the stool becomes persistently thick, which can be quite a challenge. The person experiencing this issue has noticed that their stool has shifted from being thin and soft to very thick, despite maintaining good fluid intake and avoiding foods known to thicken stool. This change is causing problems with their ostomy equipment, leading to frequent changes and discomfort. Here are some helpful tips and insights to consider:

1. Ensure you are well-hydrated, as not drinking enough fluids can lead to thicker stool.

2. Confirm whether you have an ileostomy or colostomy, as this can affect the type of advice that is most suitable for you.

3. Check your ostomy equipment. Frequent leaks might be due to an ill-fitting or low-quality appliance. It might be worth trying different brands or systems to find a better fit.

4. Consider dietary adjustments:
- Try to reduce your intake of simple carbohydrates.
- Introduce foods with high water content and natural stool-loosening properties, such as greens or corn chowder, which you are already considering.

5. Explore fiber products:
- Fiber Advance Gummies, which are chewable, have helped some people soften their output.
- Citrucel powder is known for gently softening stool without an unpleasant taste.
- Metamucil can be effective if taken at the first sign of sluggish output to prevent hard stool.

6. Use an osmotic laxative like Miralax (polyethylene glycol 3350), which is safe for both colostomy and ileostomy users. You can adjust the dose to achieve the desired stool consistency, but be cautious to avoid making the stool too runny.

7. Review any medications you are taking, as some prescriptions can cause stool to become firmer. It might be helpful to discuss this with a healthcare professional to see if any adjustments are needed.
