Barrier Change Woes - Lessons Learned the Hard Way

This topic is about dealing with unexpected leaks from an ostomy barrier, especially after a day filled with physical activities. The person sharing their experience had been successfully wearing their barrier for 2-3 days without issues and was thinking about extending this to 3-4 days. However, after a busy day of cutting trees, swimming, and sweating, they noticed a leak after just one day. They are trying to figure out what might have caused this sudden leak and are considering several possibilities:

1. Multiple swims or pool "dunkings"
2. Profuse sweating between swims
3. Rolling on the pouch during a short night's sleep

They also mentioned stopping the use of ostomy powder and were thinking about switching to a flatter barrier for better concealment. This unexpected leak affected their confidence and led to a bit of a rant.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

- It's normal to experience occasional random failures. Even with a perfect routine, a wafer might fail unexpectedly. Leaks can just happen sometimes.

- On days when you expect high stress on the barrier, like sweating or swimming, consider adding extra edge protection. You can use supplemental barrier strips to help maintain the seal. Some suggested products include Coloplast Y-shape strips and ConvaTec half-circle barrier extenders.

- One person shared success with a convex moldable flange. Switching from a standard flange to a moldable convex flange eliminated their nightly leaks. Their routine involved cleaning the skin, warming the flange in their hands, molding the opening with thumbs, and applying it without needing additional products.

- Consider using a thin silicone washer under the wafer. This washer, cut to the exact size of the stoma and lightly glued to the skin, can protect the peristomal skin even when the wafer starts to erode, allowing for longer wear.

- Heavy activity, such as heat, sweat, and multiple swims, can lift even a well-adhered wafer. The absence of stoma powder might not have been the real cause of the leak in this case.
