Just wanted to share a link to the UOAA Ostomy Academy on YouTube as Hubz and I learned a lot this morning about hernias! Another fun Saturday! Yay!

His surgeon mentioned that a loop colostomy has a slightly higher risk for hernia, so off to UOAA we went. I really didn't even know the structure of a parastomal hernia, so it was really hard to even understand how the hernia belts would work.

This video explains so much, and I just wanted to share! Enjoy the weekend!🍁🍂

Evidently, I have a small hernia, according to their graphics! Good information! Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried using an EMS/TENS muscle stimulator to help strengthen their abdominal muscles? I picked up one of these, but I haven't been using it diligently.

Hi gang,

I was thinking what a great resource this site has been for me since I found it. It would have been really helpful, but maybe a bit scary, to have found it before my ostomy, but that's water under the bridge. But I got thinking about it, and now I'm questioning why doctors and hospitals don't provide this site's contact info to any patient even considering an ostomy today. And how can we change that so potential ostomates can learn about the road ahead for them by getting on here and asking questions before the docs go chop-chop. How exactly do you get all hospitals to provide their patients specific information, like this website?

I just happened to find this site something like 4 years after my ostomy when I Googled "ostomy forum" or something like that. But I never found it during previous searches.....so I found this site pretty much by pure luck. We need to find a way to make this site available to new or soon-to-be ostomates......as that's when we really need to commiserate with fellow ostomates. Anybody have any thoughts on how we do this?

Thanks,

Bob

We've not, but it's only been 8 weeks today, so he's at the light walking stage.

Core exercises are a must-do for all of us in the fight against trying to prevent hernias.

I have suffered multiple hernias now; it's frustrating because I have been wearing a support belt.

Thanks for posting this; it's good info. I have both a colostomy and a urostomy (surgery in September 2024) but have always exercised pretty vigorously, including lifting weights, so I have not had any serious hernia issues develop. However, one popped up in my belly button a few months ago, but it only hurts (slightly) if I press rather hard on it and causes no problems for the adhesion of either bag, in part because my belly button was so deep. It looks ugly (but so do the bags!), but both my GI surgeon and my stoma nurse say there's no reason to do surgery—which would be quite complicated between two stomas like that. Just take care of it and don't do any real straining while doing gentle muscle-strengthening exercises in that area. The stoma nurse recommended a strong belly wrap to wear while doing any kind of activity to help keep it in place.
