Frequent Nighttime Gas and Sleep Disruption: Solutions?

This topic is about dealing with the challenge of frequent gas build-up in an ostomy pouch during the night, which can lead to discomfort and the fear of the pouch bursting. Here are some helpful tips and advice to manage this issue:

1. Over-the-counter anti-gas products:
- Consider using Beano, which contains the alpha-galactosidase enzyme, with your meals to help reduce gas.
- Try Gas-X or similar anti-gas tablets, as many people find these products help lessen gas build-up.

2. Dietary adjustments:
- Look up lists of high-gas foods online and try to avoid or limit them, especially in the evening. Foods like beans, certain cruciferous vegetables, and onions are common culprits.
- Avoid carbonated drinks, as they can introduce extra air into your digestive system.

3. Pouch choice and management:
- Use a pouch with an integrated charcoal or vent filter. When dry and new, these filters can help release gas gradually and keep the pouch flat for up to two days.
- Keep in mind that filters stop working once they become saturated or wet, so it's important to change the pouch or apply a filter cover before the filter becomes ineffective.
