Experiences with Costa Medical Ostomy Products?

This discussion is about experiences with Costa Medical ostomy products and managing itching when using convex rings. The person sharing their experience had a less-than-ideal time with Costa Medical but is curious about their barrier product to use under the wafer. Here's what they currently do:

- They use a flat wafer with a Hollister convex barrier ring.
- The ring swells significantly, and since they had a prolapse-and-hernia repair, their stoma is now small and retracts inside the swollen ring.
- The swelling helps prevent leaks and keeps the skin healthy, but it causes itching during the first day or so after a fresh change.

They are looking for suggestions to stop the itching and improve the fit. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Consider using a wipe-on skin prep under the wafer or ring, as the itching might be a reaction to the barrier itself.
2. Reach out to Hollister for alternative convex rings or other samples. Many manufacturers, including Hollister, offer free samples upon request.
3. Contact several major companies for sample products to compare fits and formulations.
4. Older barrier rings often contained alcohol, which can irritate the skin. Switching to alcohol-free, plant-based seals like Eakin Cohesive Seals from Convatec helped one person eliminate itching.
5. Some people find better skin health and longer wear time by:
- Using only a convex wafer without any rings or skin preps/removers.
- Cleaning with plain water or letting shampoo rinse over the area instead of using chemical cleansers.
