Colonoscopy Prep Tips for Ostomy Patients

When you're preparing for a colonoscopy and you have an ostomy, it can feel a bit daunting. But with some thoughtful planning, you can manage the process smoothly. Here are some helpful tips and advice from others who have been through it:

- Appliance choice during prep:
- Consider switching from your usual pouch to an irrigation sleeve. Some people specifically mention using Hollister’s irrigation sleeve.
- If you prefer to stick with your pouch, make sure it’s a drainable one that opens at the bottom. This will make it easier to empty during the rapid output phase.

- Day-of-procedure setup:
- On the morning of your colonoscopy, put on a fresh drainable pouch. The gastroenterologist can insert the scope through the open tail without needing to remove the pouch.
- If you use a 2-piece system, the staff can simply detach the pouch for the exam if that’s more convenient.

- Practical prep tips:
- Stay close to a bathroom during the laxative phase to make things easier.
- Keep a few extra drainable pouches or sleeves handy. Change them as needed until the output is clear.
- Once you finish the prep solution, expect little or no output for several hours.

- Diet adjustments before prep:
- About three days before your procedure, stop eating foods that are hard to digest. This will help reduce thick output and make the prep process smoother.

- Post-procedure considerations:
- Since you will likely be sedated, make sure to arrange for someone to drive you home, as you won’t be allowed to drive yourself.
