The dam burst and my bag is working again!

This topic is about a person who experienced a blockage in their ostomy, which caused a concerning situation where intestinal contents bypassed the ostomy and drained through a fistula into the vagina. This happened in the middle of the night, causing a large and unpleasant discharge. Fortunately, by the next morning, the blockage cleared, and the output began flowing into the ostomy bag again, much to her relief. She is hopeful that the drainage will stop and that her ostomy bag will continue to function properly.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Rest and Recovery: It's important to rest, stay hydrated, and soothe your gut. Consider brewing a calming decaf tea, relaxing with a movie, and allowing your body to recover.

2. Emotional Support: Celebrate the relief of the blockage clearing, take it easy, and remember that the community understands what you're going through. Emotional support is crucial.

3. Fistula Experience and Surgical Options:
- One person shared a story about a friend who had a similar issue with a recto-vaginal fistula. This friend went through multiple surgeries that initially didn't work due to scar tissue but eventually found success with a skilled surgeon at the University of Washington Hospital.
- It's important to seek an early referral to an experienced colorectal surgeon, as too many previous surgeries can limit options because of scar tissue.
- There is an offer to connect with the patient who had a successful surgery for first-hand advice if further surgery is being considered.

The person is also looking forward to a calm weekend and hopes to get a full night's sleep, wondering why blockages often seem to resolve during the night.
